Spirits enter and move their bodies. In a trance and with eyes closed firmly, they move fluidly and methodically, in synchronicity with the gamelan and with each other. Yet, when I took this photo, they opened their eyes and stared. I repositioned myself to the right of the stage and when I took another photo, they opened their eyes and again stared intensely at me. Are these stares of contempt?
