For lack of foreground interest, this photograph would have been deemed a flop. No matter where we go, there will always be rules of judgement, seemingly created by consensus. The question that bears on the photographer is, "Does it matter?" It would matter most, perhaps, if the image is for commercial use or if the photographer is fishing for compliments. Rules are man-made and even if they persist in being right, they don't last very long because perceptions change over time.
